UNDERSTANDING Internal Doors

Oh gosh… Internal Doors – another overwhelming decision you need to make?

Hopefully my blog can help you choose the right style, finish and colour for your internal doors (in simple terms).

Style

Your doors can be flush, with inlays or with moulding panels. Flush doors are basically flat. For example, when you have wooden veneer doors with the wood grains on show, it can look very interesting and therefore there is no need for additional details. Suits a low budget and a modern home. Inlays can range from stainless strips or in a colour. The inlays can be vertical or horizontal creating a design on a plain door. Moulding panels are the most popular choice. However, they also come with a higher price tag especially if you opt for the wooden version.

Finish

If you want to paint your doors, opt for white primed doors. These doors are ready for you to apply paint or have them professionally sprayed. There is a vast range of wood stained doors – be mindful when choosing real wooden veneer doors as over time, the colour can change.

You can also have laminate doors which will be less in price to real wood veneer.

Colour

The colour is really dependant on your interiors colour scheme. Remember internal doors are there to stay and are on each floor of the house so you would want to keep them fairly neutral or as a statement such as black. If you choose to paint the doors, perhaps go for a colour such a grey that works with the rest of the schemes.

Glazed Doors

If there are some rooms that need doors with glass, please make sure you check with your architect if they need to be fire rated or not. Glazed fire rated doors can mount up to a very high price so best to check this. ‘Critall’ style doors are becoming extremely popular. However, unless they’re bespoke because not many companies offer an ‘off the shelf’ product in fire rated. Glazed doors are used in rooms where you want to allow the flow of natural light and not worry too much about privacy.
